A visual mix tape of different styles and techniques,

On the spectrum of animals-online, polar opposite of cuteoverload.com and LOLCats would probably be Thomas Wilder‘s new Animals Loose in NYC series. Not that these images are any less to look at—they’re just infinitely more informative. The concept of which Thomas came up with after recently finding out that a dolphin got stuck in the Gowanus Canal in his own neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Taylor’ s paintings have a symbiotic theme showing organisms, animals and humans all coexisting. Whether parasitic or beneficial, the common thread behind his oil on wood paintings is that these strange creatures all exist together - similar to our own reality. His fascination with animals, environment and human relations has led him to turn animals into humans in an anthropomorphic figure. The collective consciousness that makes us aware of other beings on the planet is incorporated in his paintings to tell a story of life and this thing we call death. Taylor’ s abstract narratives are dream-oriented in a playful, sometimes renaissance oriented painting style. With humor, harmony, morphology, genealogy, symbiosis and just not taking himself too seriously, Kevin Earl Taylor attempts to expose the animal within.
In 1995 he received a B.F.A. from The Savannah College of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited and published throughout the US, as well as internationally. Though primarily an oil painter, he also explores time based art forms such as sound and video.

At first glance, Eckart Hahn’s paintings appear to have a 3-dimensional quality to them. His brushstrokes illustrate melting plastic, undulating fabric, and muscular forms, all giving the work a tangible quality. Like the old masters, the composition is strategic, creating a humiliating and humorous juxtaposition. Brilliant subject, palette and composition in all of these selects.

Artist Adam S Doyle is interested in what’s not there, he uses long swift brushstrokes, calligraphic in style, to create his images, bold and simple, yet infused with he essence of the subject. Using eastern art as a foundation, Doyle manages to find a balance between the elegance of form and a representation of ‘energy within’. This is no easy task, “I’ve always loved unfinished paintings because you could see the alchemic process of surface and paint transforming into a living person. With my paintings, it does take quite a bit of working and reworking to arrive at the place where every brush stroke fits into a fluidly flowing whole. It’s important to me to find a balance between an elegance of form that holds both visible marks of paint and a representation of ‘energy within.’”

“Born in Akureyri, a small town on the north coast of Iceland. Grew up drawing, painting and building stuff. Also played some basketball and collected basketball cards. Got my first PC, at first I mainly used it to play computer games, but soon I found out I could also draw on it. Found out that there was a profession called graphic design that combined two of my biggest hobbies, computers and drawing. Built my first website, showing some images I had made on the computer. Around this time I also did my first few freelance jobs, not worth showing. Studied fine art in college. Loved drawing and learning art history but hated math and Danish. Got a summer job doing web and poster design for the local art center. Even had my own office. Moved to Reykjavík to study graphic design at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Started working with my typography teacher, Atli Hilmarsson. Tired of being in Iceland I decided to move to New York to do an internship with karlssonwilker. I wasn’t ready to go back to Iceland so I moved to Berlin to study at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule for one semester. Went back to Iceland to finish my studies. For my graduation project I created a big patchwork quilt, inspired by things from my childhood. After graduating I realized graphic design was not my biggest passion anymore, so I relocated to London to focus on drawing. Joined Big Active. Moved back to Berlin where I’ve been working and living ever since.”

Anny Wong is a recent graduate from Rhode Island School of Design’s in film, animation and video department but she’s very much into drawing. Her passion for art with an experimental spirit is visible in this delicate swimmers series. She colors these original pencil drawings in Photoshop and uses some found materials like textured paper for the background. Inspired since ever by Ogawa Mimei‘s children’s tales and music, she likes coming up with pretty images and hidden narratives and found enjoyable drawing these characters.

What it’s known is that summer is for fun so let’s go swimming with the same spirit.

Seattle born, New York based illustrator and graphic designer Erin Jang has a fantastic ongoing series called Food Sketches which I could not resist sharing with our readers. In these series Jang illustrates abstracted graphic representations of foods she has eaten in different restaurants. Such a creative way to share food experiences and give little tips of what restaurants to try.

Tara Tucker has created a stunning bestiary of animals crossed with flora or having bizarre relationships with other species. Maybe the fact that she often accompanied her mother to Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, where mum volunteered to learn taxidermy and Tara was assigned to classify and number bones and skeletons, has something to do with her vast interest in the animal kingdom. At that time, she either wanted to be or marry the illustrator working in the lab for the biologists, who traveled all around the world to collect specimens and draw the animals.

Melissa Haslam graduated with a Bachelor of Computing (Multimedia Technology) from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. After working in computer graphics for a few years she found herself wanting to push her creative skills further and went back to school to study Visual Arts at RMIT, focusing on painting and drawing.

With an emphasis on narrative theme and a romanticized, escapist view of the world, her paintings are populated by beautiful females in fairytale-like scenarios. Influences include botanical drawings, the pre-raphaelites, japanese illustration and contemporary fashion photography.

Michael Peck’s artistic practice is concerned with the sensation of disorientation and dislocation that is often felt within the post modern world. Exploring issues regarding the loss of cultural identity, his work particularly focuses on the effects within minority groups and individuals existing on the fringe who are challenged to assimilate within the larger community. The scenes in Michael’s paintings are quiet, the participants are paused as they stand withdrawn, juxtaposed against a dynamic population; they are overwhelmed by mass-culture; one which has been composed from the interaction, assimilation and constant change of subcultures. His work looks at the place of the individual within a pluralistic society where a constant shift of values and beliefs leaves a great uncertainty of belonging.
