Zeichen und Wunder

This is a blog about illustration and animation.
A visual mix tape of different styles and techniques,
like a coloured bouquet of flowers.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Yours Katrin

VALERO DOVAL

Valero Doval is a Spanish artist that combines hand drawn elements with collage, often cleverly piecing together objects with similar themes, which is evident in this illustration for Elephant magazine. Combining a bird with a plane is a simple yet elegant concept, and Valero executes it in a stunning way.

Valero distinctly separates his editorial work from his personal work on his website. Both sections are fun to look at, as his concepts are intriguing and colorful. My favorite section is his collection has to be of his circus pets, which combines vintage photographs of dogs and cats with various shapes in a humorous way.

MARK WAGNER

SHORT BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT: Mark Wagner was born quietly in the rural Midwest at the tail end of thirteen children. Since leaving the sandbox at the age of fourteen, he has continued his creative career in the fields of writing, collage, and bookmaking. He is co-founder of The Booklyn Artists Alliance, and has published books under the name Bird Brain Press and X-ing Books.

Wagner’s work is collected by dozens of institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, The Walker Art Center, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution. It has shown at The Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Research Institute, and The Brooklyn Museum.

STATEMENT ON COLLAGE WITH CURRENCY: The one dollar bill is the most ubiquitous piece of paper in America. Collage asks the question: what might be done to make it something else? It is a ripe material: intaglio printed on sturdy linen stock, covered in decorative filigree, and steeped in symbolism and concept. Blade and glue transform it-reproducing the effects of tapestries, paints, engravings, mosaics, and computers—striving for something bizarre, beautiful, or unbelievable… the foreign in the familiar.

GENERAL CREATIVE STATEMENT: My creative production includes work in many media: from writing and artist bookmaking to drawing, collage, and assemblage. Though varied, this work is far from eclectic-forming several discrete bodies that both stand on their own and link in nature and theme to their counterparts. In whatever media employed I have a tendency toward meticulous production and solid graphic presentation. Usually fantastical, occasional surreal, and often interdisciplinary- I am satisfied only when concept and craft meet on equally firm footing.

MATTHEW CUSICK

Exhibiting internationally since 1995, New York-based illustrator Matthew Cusick owns an impressive portfolio of mixed media art. The Texas-born king of collage is widely known for his work with vintage map cut-outs, configuring entire states and countries into credible works of art. As applaudable as this work is, I’m particularly drawn to the colourfully ironic ‘Happy Ending’ series, as well as the religious undertones found within the much more somber portrayals of ‘Constellations’.

HELEN MUSSELWHITE

Helen works with paper, coloured and painted, hand cutting detailed and multi-layered scenes inspired in the main by the natural world and its inhabitants, although people and their belongings do increasingly creep into her world!

Helen works from a studio in her home accompanied by her dog Earl but only if he doesn’t steal paper off cuts from the bin!

By the use of bold colour, strong graphic line and familiar images she creates highly individual and visually appealing pieces of art that make an instant impact. Her work has a distinctive hand crafted quality that pays respect to all forms of mid century design, folk and ethnic art, as well as current and future trends.

Each piece combines the hand cutting, folding and scoring of a wide range of papers and card that are further worked on to create patterned and textured surfaces. They are then used to build scenes in box frames which are often complex and consist of many layers. This process means that each item of work is truly individual with no two pieces the same. Influenced by the natural world each piece is manipulated to become an intriguing place, a glimpse into another world of fiction and fairytale.
