Zeichen und Wunder

This is a blog about illustration and animation.
A visual mix tape of different styles and techniques,
like a coloured bouquet of flowers.
We hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

ALEX VARANESE

A San Francisco-based artist characterized by an unhealthy fixation on red and a style that mixes 2D, 3D and typography in ways that I’d like to think are highly original but probably aren’t in the grand scheme of things.

MAYUMI HARYOTO

“I was born 28 years ago. Mother is Japanese and father is Indonesian—just to explain my name. I’m a self-taught illustrator.

I graduated highschool early and I only took one year graphic design course at Digital College Studio (now International Design School) in Jakarta. I started working at the age of 18. I changed jobs a lot from a 2D artist in a game developer studio, art director in ad agencies, record labels, assistant producer/director, storyboard artist in film production houses, and few more others until I finally discovered that the world of illustration apparently is more than just comics and video games. I fell in love and it’s almost six years since I decided to dive into it.

I use both traditional and digital techniques with no real preference of medium. I’m greatly inspired by juxtapositions and sublime narratives but more specifically ukiyo-e (Japanese wood block prints), edo period art, and also Indonesia in 1950s, Jakarta/Batavia during Dutch colonial period, music, and colorful Asia.”

KAREENA ZEREFOS

Kareena is a Sydney born, London based artist, designer and flâneuse, who collects fine bone china tea sets, but prefers to drink coffee.

She has an unhealthy obsession with dangerously sharp 2B pencils, which may or may not be associated with her perfectionist Virgo tendencies… and her pencils, along with a yearning to escape to a world of make believe, lead her to create whimsical illustrative work with a sense of isolation and bittersweet nostalgia.

Having studied design at the College of Fine Arts (UNSW), Kareena’s work often combines traditional drawing with contemporary graphic techniques, with which she has the pleasure of working across a range of commercial projects for the music, fashion and advertising industries.

She loves the word ‘elephant’ (isn’t it just the best word ever?), her Italian greyhound called Pelle and visiting the Natural History Museum.

Gabi  Piserchia has also coauthored with Lea Lobosco of Redimei, a project that converts from technological trashes to create new design objects.

RONALD KURNIAWAN

Ronald Kurniawan graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Inspired by ideograms, syllables, letterforms, beasts and heroic landscapes, he slowly but surely continues to create a visual language where the wilderness and civilization could merge happily together. With the belief that the sublime and nuclear age could coexist, he paints romantic environments and breaks the quiet scene with juxtaposed imagery taking the shape of icons and letterforms.   He currently lives and works in Los Angeles where he paints meticulously and happily accompanied by his pug Ruffles, an avid artist himself.

RAYMOND LEMSTRA

“In childhood, one encounters and experiences many things for the first time. Through curiosity and imagination, these moments are lifted to almost magical heights. As you get older, new impressions become more scarce and it’s a rare experience to be surprised by anything. I try to bring back the sense of wonder we remember from being a child, bridging the young and mature, by creating a contained fantasy world populated by my characters.

With my work I like to refer to the illustrative nature of primitive drawings and sculptures. What I find interesting about these is the distortion as a result of selective emphasis; parts of interest are emphasized, unimportant parts reduced or left out. For characters this means they come out big headed, where focus is on the face and the body is trimmed to its essential properties. I deliberately apply this primitive logic as a method. But I don’t apply it equally to all aspects of my work. Instead, I choose to use a very mature, highly laboursome technique for the execution of my work. This contrast, between the naive and sophisticated, gives the work a somewhat awkward taste. A clash of intent, simultaneously assuming simplicity and complexity, randomness and reason, flaws and perfection. The purpose of which is to inspire a sense of joy and discovery.”
